Welcome to our latest edition of China Voices, a quarterly update on freedom of religion or belief (FoRB) in China.
So far in 2023, CSW has recorded 82 concerning incidents for various religious or belief groups across China. These have been both offline and online, with several rights activists being forcibly displaced in the name of “stability” around the Two Sessions in early March. There are also disturbing reports of an enforced database and an app to oblige adherents of religious groups to register their personal details.
In this update, we hear from the brave family members of Christian leaders in detention for fabricated charges such as ‘fraud’ and ‘illegal business operations’ and about Muslim scholars facing lengthy jail terms after trying to offer Islamic education in mosques.
