In the run-up to its 20th party congress, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) further stepped up its efforts to both maintain political stability and contain Covid-19 in the country. Many people suffered shortages of food and medicine in areas that had been locked down for extended periods, including in Xinjiang and Tibet. Tragically, this was happening even when the human rights crisis in Xinjiang had caught global attention following the OHCHR report.
In this edition, we list some cases in chronological order, highlighting violations affecting religious or belief groups throughout China , including Hong Kong.
We note that, under mounting political pressure, some religious leaders who previously suffered persecution themselves have changed their stance, turning into promotors of ‘Sinicization of religion‘ or even appearing to have joined the ranks of the persecutors.
